The first Renaissance wallpapers made of hand-painted silk were available to only a few....
The beginnings of the history of wallpaper more or less as we know it today date back to the Renaissance. They were hand-made, which made them very labor-intensive works that the wealthiest could afford. Wallpapers decorated palaces and were commissioned from the best artists. Now wallpapers are available for almost everyone. However, silk is still synonymous with luxury.

Where does silk come from? For the production of fabrics, the silkworm thread that feeds on the leaves of the mulberry tree (a species of moth, initially appearing mainly in East Asia) is suitable for use on an industrial scale. How did it start? There are many legends, one of them says that the Empress Leizu in the 3rd century BC. once she was drinking tea under a mulberry tree when suddenly something fell into her cup. It was a cocoon that began to unfold. There was an insect inside. The empress noticed that the thread he formed did not break easily and decided to use it.
Whatever the case, silk became the favorite fabric of the Chinese upper class and an important export. The Silk Road reached Europe in the first millennium BC. The Chinese managed to keep their silk-making methods secret for a long time - attempting to export silkworms abroad was punishable by death. Another legend says that the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great and his wife Theodorica loved silk. So they decided to steal the Chinese secret of the production of this fabric. The silkworm larvae were hidden in the hollow canes of monks sent on spy missions and thus found their way to Europe.
